The goal of this project was to redesign an iconic structure using our knowledge of tectonics. The intervention of this project was to reinvent the crystal palace using new materials and tectonic assemblies, while maintaining the recognizable formal qualities of the original building. The intervention proposes to maintain the qualities of showcase and spectacle of the crystal palace by transforming it into a travelling pavilion such that beautiful formal qualities of the palace can be experienced by a broader audience. The focus was on the modules of the original design as a way of understanding the underlying composition of the Palace. By replacing the heavy cast iron and plate glass of the original Palace with lightweight and inexpensive aluminum and ETFE, and developing a new modular and collapsible tectonic system, the traveling pavilion becomes a delicate, crystalline installation.
